Life is overwhelming at times and maybe things just do not go the way we plan them and we can become distraught. Perhaps you even woke up in a bad mood and who knows why. It does not matter so much why you are in a bad mood, but what you can do to improve your mood and improve your day. When we change our thought process or do things differently to be positive we can change how we react to life by enjoying it more and more with every positive thought. Life is full of complications and keeping simple and easy positive tools at hand will greatly improve your day, your attitude and your life.
- Exercise: According to apa.org within 5 minutes of exercising you will reap the benefits of a better mood. So take a 5 minute walk around the block, do a tabata workout, climb the stairs at your office, and just get your body and your blood moving.
- Spend time outdoors in nature: According to the NCBI those of us living in an urban environment are overstimulated (hard fascination) which induces cognitive fatigue. By getting outdoors and spending time in nature it allows our attention to be captured by scene content (soft fascination) and eliciting feeling of pleasure. Spend some time in nature to restore your fatigued brain and boost your mood.
- Do good: “It is better to give than to receive” this saying is backed by research. So what do they say? Have a sense of altruism, meaning to put the needs of other people before your own. The benefits are full of positivity; you feel good when you help others, gives a sense of belonging, reduces the feeling of isolation, keeps things in perspective, reduces stress, boosts positive feelings and it makes the world a better place. You don’t have to limit it to helping at a soup kitchen isn’t your thing. Make it something that you love. If you love to shop take an elderly person shopping to get their errands done. If it is a lonely neighbor invite them over for coffee or dinner at your house. Make it your thing and make it fun.
- Essential Oils: Using therapeutic grade essential oils can change support a positive mood with just a few sniffs. Since they come from nature I feel they also help connect you to nature. Lavender oil is studied extensively and its positive effects on mood. It has shown that 4 drops of Lavender oil significantly elevated the mood of people in the study. It has also been shown to improve sleep (Bonus). I just bought a new diffuser and love the large reservoir. You can check it our here. My personal top 4 essential oils for a mood boost are cedar wood, arborvitae, frankincense and bergamot. Those 4 have a pretty earthy smell and that is what I like but if you like something less earthy try ylang ylang, rose, or Lavender which are all very flowery.
Life gets crazy and there is not always time to do all of these. You can always squeeze in a 5 min walk, sniff some essential oils, and do something small and nice for someone (like a cup of coffee for a coworker, or give your mom a call…hehe). So go have a good day and be happy.
